World Music: Konono #1, "Lufuala Ndonga"
(Congo) Here’s a fascinating video that presents exciting musical developments in the Congo. On the streets of Kinshasa, musicians who have moved from the bush to the city play the repertoire they were born to, to communicate with their ancestors and with the people. How to be heard above the urban din? Amplification, of course. Traditional likembés, or thumb pianos are hooked up to a wall of amplifiers and the resulting sonic distortions create a music that might be as at home at a downtown avant-garde concert as on a busy African street. Add dancers and percussion and it's a tranced out, hip shaking party - one we can get a glimpse of through this video.
