1 Peter 2:11-25 - Alien Living
As Alien, Sojourners, and exiles Christians live according to a different command structure. Christians are separated from the surrounding culture in the way they conduct their lives. Separation is not isolation from others, but living uniquely God-Center, Christ-Exalting life. Believers separate themselves for honor sake, so that those that speak against you will be converted to Christ. Another structure is that Christians subject themselves for the fools sake. It doesn’t matter if the human authority is small or large, obedience to the authorities in your life will silence those who foolishly speak out against God and his ways. Thirdly, Christians must submit themselves for freedom sake. God expects you to be subject even to human authorities who are neither believers nor morally right. You are to honer and respect everyone and not use your freedom as an excuse to sin. Fourthly, Christians must serve masters (employers) for endurance sake. It doesn't matter of they are just or unjust bosses. when we suffer for the good we do, we experience it as a gracious thing. Finally, we seek to imitate Christ's example for our soul's sake. The Gospel of grace and mercy is all about what God has done for us in Christ so that we can live on this earth now as Exiles and sojourners, waiting for our heavenly home. We separate, submit, subject, and serve because we are seeking to follow God and not men. Christ is the one who lived without sin, did not complain in suffering, but knew his father's plan of redemption as he born our sins upon the cross. Only by Christ's sufferings is anybody healed and forgiven of their sin and rebellion against the highest authority - God. We have all lived our live without God and need to come back and live under Christ's Rule and Authority.
