Grocery School: Organic 101
Sarah East explains what organic really means on this lesson of Grocery School. There has been a lot of buzz about organics. In the market there are organic vegetables, cotton and shampoos as well. So, how do we know what should we pick? • Organic products do not contain any genetically modified product at any point of manufacture. • The farmers can’t use any kind of pesticides. • The organic products must contribute to sustainable farming practices. You can decide the organic product with its label. It usually goes by percentage. Some products are certified organics. But the USDA certification can cost the farmers a lot of money and time, they avoid the actual label. Similar to USDA, free range also signifies that the meat is organic. They are relatively costlier than the normal products. Organic foods don’t come in contact with the regular foods. Certain grocery stores have separate organic section.
