Kelly Slater Wins His 10th ASP World Title
Sorry, Bo Derek, but Kelly Slater’s "10" was a much more beautiful and dramatic beach scene. The 38-year-old surfing veteran from Cocoa Beach put the wraps on his historic 10th world surfing championship Saturday, winning the Rip Curl Pro Search contest in Isabela, Puerto Rico — fittingly, with a perfect 10.I don't know how it all came together," said a watery-eyed Slater, trying to hold back his emotions and wearing the new Quiksilver 10 black cap. "Just before (the contest in) Brazil, a friend asked me about going for 10, and I said, 'Yeah, I'll go for it,' then the points started coming my way. I knew something special was coming."Slater actually had clinched the title in the quarterfinals by defeating Brazil's Adriano de Souza 18.87-14.36, then knocked off Taj Burrow 16.34-14.87 and, finally, Bede Durbidge 18.77-14.43. Slater scored a perfect 10 in that final with two huge whips, capped by a complete rotation, no-grab aerial.Slater became the oldest world surfing champion -- and also was the youngest (20), just two years after turning pro after his junior year at Cocoa Beach High. It was his 45th ASP contest title.ASP world titles1992: Beat Damien Hardman, 7,765-6,5401994: Beat Shane Powell, 6,660-6,2201995: Beat Rob Machado, 6,040-5,9601996: Beat Shane Beschen, 9,540-7,9061997: Beat Mark Occhilupo, 8,260-6,6261998: Beat Michael Campbell, 6,398-6,3602005: Beat Andy Irons, 7,962-7,8602006: Beat Andy Irons, 8,124-6,9482008: Beat Bede Durbidge, 8,832-6,7802010: Beat Jordy Smith (final points to be determined) 10th asp world title, kelly slater, pro surfer, puerto rico, surfersvillage, Surf
