Yemen’s taste for khat trumps its thirst for water
Khat, a mild narcotic chewed by nearly all of the country’s men and many of its women, is a cultural institution in Yemen — and it may soon also be its downfall. The arid country uses an estimated one third of its water to grow the plant. Some fear that imbalance could cause the fast-growing capital Sanaa to run dry within a decade. Duration: 01:53
