Civil Commitment System
40 years ago, the movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest' contributed to the perception that our nation's psychiatric hospitals were snake pits oppressing free thinkers and non-conformists. The movement called deinstitutionalization - moving the mentally ill out of hospitals and into the community - began and it has reduced overall state hospital populations by 90%. Now some say public policy has swung too far in the opposite direction, that treatment is not being provided to those that truly need it. In this program we discuss the Civil Commitment System.
