HistoryCast 011 - Faces of Schenectady, 1715-1750
Bill Buell interviews art historian Ona Curran, co-curator of the Schenectady County (NY) Historical Society’s newest exhibit “Faces of Schenectady”.Six original portraits and seven high-quality prints (along with other period artifacts and textiles) bring Schenectady’s earliest residents to life. This exhibit was inspired by SCHS’s newest acquisition, the portrait of Schenectady Massacre survivor and Native interpreter, Laurence Clause Van Der Volgen. Curator Kathryn Weller and Guest Curator Ona Curran have assembled artifacts, representative of Schenectady during this era and those owned by subjects in the portraits, to help bring the world of 18th century Schenectady to visitors of today. The portraits featured in the exhibit are attributed to some of the most celebrated limners of the mid-18th century: Nehemiah Patridge, Pieter Vanderlyn, and John Heaton.View photos of the Society as they assembled this exciting exhibit by visiting the SCHS page on Facebook (and give them a "Like" while you're there!).Time(s): Monday - Friday 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Location: Schenectady County Historical SocietyContact: Kathryn WellerPhone: 518-374-0263Email: curator@schist.org For more information about Schenectady County history, visit www.schist.org or www.schenectadycounty.com.
